Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This book helps readers determine what Scriptures meant at the time they were written and how that meaning applies to us today. In order to do that, this widely acclaimed text unfolds the principles of responsible exegesis and hermeneutics focusing on the literary and historical contexts of the Bible. This vital guide explains differences between the Old Testament narratives, the Epistles, Gospels, Parables, Psalms, and more. This volume guides readers in understanding the literary dimensions of the Bible by incorporating techniques for interpreting Scripture, while it also maintains faithfulness to literary genres. It's a practical approach to Bible study--one that makes good sense and is easy to understand. This new third edition includes, among other changes, updates language, a new Foreword, improved diagrams, a new section on the Song of Songs and an updated list of recommended commentaries and resources.

I read a rather large excerpt from the book. It contained many misinterpretations of traditional definitions of Literature terms. It stated that the dermal, surface, definition of a verse was in the traditional sense an allegory, or metaphor, while the literal interpretation was falsely stated as a metaphor, when in fact it was more a literal interpretion. (John does X, means John does X, not John does X, is symbolic of John doing Z)
