Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Sideways is the story of two friends — Miles and Jack — going away together for the last time to steep themselves in everything that makes it good to be young and single: pinot, putting, and prowling bars. In the week before Jack plans to marry, the pair heads out from Los Angeles to the Santa Ynez wine country. For Jack, the tasting tour is Seven Days to D-Day, his final stretch of freedom. For Miles — who has divorced his wife, is facing an uncertain career and has lost his passion for living — the trip is a weeklong opportunity to evaluate his past, his future, and himself.

A raucous and surprising novel filled with wonderful details about wine, Sideways is also a thought-provoking and funny book about men, women, and human relationships.

Review:

"[A] lively debut....Pickett takes his readers on a jolly ride." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"Skillful work about a friendship between two ultimately likable guys. But the movie will need zingers — the dialogue here is only adequate." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"[A] buddy novel in the cinematic vein of Swingers....Pickett plays the sex-and-the-single-man angle for all its worth here, nodding occasionally at such larger themes as friendship and romance. Call it Nick Hornby lite." Booklist

I enjoyed the book as I am just learning about wine so every description really helped my understanding and created a passion to learn more. I had already seen and loved the film especially Maya so I had high expectations. I wasnt really disappointed but I felt the film outcome was more realistic. I didnt like Miles in the film and liked him even less in the book but I totally got his reaction to life, loneliness and disappointments - drown out the feeling with excess, be it wine or food. I also felt the friendship with Miles and Jack was very real. The women though were not as believable as those protrayed in the film. I didnt buy it that Maya would make it so easy for Miles - I totally bought into the women in the film - they were real and I felt the hope that Miles felt - it is worth reaching out in the end and the first move was much better coming from him as in the film. In summary, the book is good but the film is better. If you want an introduction to wine appreciation, both book and film are fabulous. Ax
