Though he may always remain a fringe figure, Burroughs is also one of the most important, visionary, and formidable American writers of the last century. This bio/appreciation/photo album is indifferently written and doesn't go very deep, but it is a valuable introduction to the man, whose life and personality are so deeply embedded in his work. You get all the greatest hits-the conventional childhood, the friendships with Ginsberg & Keroauc, the wife shooting in Mexico City, the writing of "Naked Lunch," Tangier, NYC, Kansas, and, oh yes, the drugs. What you really don't get is an understanding of the man behind all of this, as English author Caveney seems content with the iconoclastic cult figure image. Fun fact: His son was born addicted to speed. Best to exterminate all rational thought before reading.
