Publisher Comments:

Engineered from the finest genes, and trained to be a secret courier in a future world, Friday operates over a near-future Earth, where chaos reigns. Working at Boss's whimsical behest she travels from far north to deep south, finding quick, expeditious solutions as one calamity after another threatens to explode in her face....

Synopsis:

Friday is a secret courier. She is employed by a man known to her only as 'Boss'. Operating from and over a near-future Earth, in which North America has become Balkanized into dozens of independent states, where culture has become bizarrely vulgarized and chaos is the happy norm, she finds herself on shuttlecock assignment at Boss' seemingly whimsical behest. From New Zealand to Canada, from one to another of the new states of America's disunion, she keeps her balance nimbly with quick, expeditious solutions to one calamity and scrape after another.

Exploding Monkey, September 10, 2006 (view all comments by Exploding Monkey)
Masterfully written as always?but nowhere near his best?Friday is a good read for fans of Robert A. Heinlein. However, while the main character is compelling, and the universe she is in is well realized, Heinlein gets sidetracked by his libido more often than he should. Simply put: there is a ton of unnecessary sexual content getting in the way of the main character?s journey throughout the tale. Heinlein suffers from an inability to kill his darlings with this book. In the end, it hampers what is otherwise an excellent look on the moral issues surrounding of cloning and the topic of equality. Heinlein, always political and always sticking to the harder edge of sci-fi, will please fans of his later works with this story, but it may be a bad entry point for Heinlein newbies. If you?re of the latter group, I suggest starting with: ?The Moon is a Harsh Mistress? or ?Glory Road.?
