Darth Maul is a character I like. Since this is a prequel, however, and we all know his fate, the character's fate is never really in question. You also never get to delve too deeply into his mind. That doesn't matter, though, because this book is still worth reading ... if you're a Star Wars fan (non-fans would never pick it up in the first place).

There is plenty of the things Star Wars is famous for. Interesting aliens, action and Jedi fill the book's pages. And while there aren't any surprises, what you get is still a solid read that is really little more than an exciting chase scene drawn out over the length of a novel. A rogue has something Darth Sidious needs, so Maul is sent after him. The directive? Kill everyone who knows anything about said item. Bad news for characters is good news for readers.

It's risky to set a book up around a villain ... especially one the author can't really do much with. Risky, but it's paid off here. It won't be the best Star Wars book you'll read, but it is well worth the time.
