Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Max McDaniels lives a quiet life in the suburbs of Chicago until the day he stumbles upon a mysterious Celtic tapestry. Many strange people are interested in Max and his tapestry, and his discovery will lead him to Rowan Academy, a secret school where great things await him.

But dark things are waiting, too. When Max learns that priceless artworks and other gifted children are disappearing from around the globe, he finds himself in the crossfire of an ancient struggle between good and evil.

Review:

"Max's intelligence and goodhearted nature give the story a solid emotional core even as the surprising twists and turns keep the pages turning. Neff's first novel is sure to draw many new fans eager to see what happens next." VOYA

Review:

"This novel's sprawling, quirky boarding school has obvious parallels to Hogwarts, but Neff's storytelling boasts charms of its own, and U.S. readers may appreciate that this magical adventure...takes place here rather than abroad." Booklist

Review:

"Neff's language is often evocative, incorporating Irish myths like the legend of Cuchulain. Though the scenery feels familiar, the book will connect with its audience." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"Despite an over-reliance on formula, Neff's stylish prose, deft characterization, and synthesis of Celtic myth make for spellbinding storytelling." Hornbook

This first book in the Tapestry series proves to be a true page-turner. Henry Neff is a beautiful writer, smart and engaging showing imagination while prompting the reader to engage in deep moral questions such as the nature of fear, the discernment of courage, and the development of power and knowledge as weapons to wield or as gifts to cultivate. Neff's characters evolve organically as if the author's pen only transcribed their growth rather than forcing it. The story, though, keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat with imaginative and exciting twists and revelations, setting up the rest of the series to be as engaging and brilliantly conceived as this first novel. This is a definite "must-read" for heroic adventure and fantasy enthusiasts alike.
