Vonnegut is a master story teller with this book. From Diana who is afraid of electricity to Elliot Rosewater, himself, the characters are a rich blend of the eccentric to the obvious. All are unforgettable. Vonnegut's characters tend to spread themselves across his novels, too large to be contained in just one book. Elliot Rosewater also appears in Slaughterhouse Five as does the illusive character, Elliot Rosewater's idol, Philip Jose Farmer. As a native Hoosier, as was Vonnegut, and in regard to God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater's setting, the book works with its small town Indiana setting and the odd characters that it represents. A terrific read as it winds its way through the lives of people who have grown hopeless or happy in their everyday struggle to survive.

A chaotic and thoughtful story inundated with detail both necessary and superfluous. It's Vonnegut at his wildest I heard it aptly described. God Bless you Mr. Rosewater is a satirical look at society, class, privilege, sexuality, humanity, and really just about everything else. Characters come and go from the story like guests at a dinner party. The seemingly needless details provided about each ones life paint a fascinating picture of the world you are now a voyeur in.
The protagonist is Eliot Rosewater, a messianic figure to be sure. Eliot inherits a remarkable fortune, one that was established through his family over generations. While going through divorce proceedings with his wife Sylvia a young lawyer working for the firm that handles the Rosewater foundation, Norman Mushari, concocts a scheme to land himself a portion of Eliot?s massive wealth. He intends to do so by proving Eliot to be insane. The youngest Indiana Rosewater does little to help his cause as his actions are not accepted as logical by his peers whom he despises anyway. Eliot has in his mind become a man of the people living in Rosewater County and playing the part of guardian angel to its most impoverished and degenerative inhabitants.
God Bless you Mr. Rosewater is a model for satire writers. On the whole it is unique cover to cover and while it fails to follow the traditional novel prose it is wildly successful in its ultimate goal to critique, spoof and above all else entertain.
