Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Combining investigative journalism with a survey of current scientific research, Phyllis Burke pushes our society's hottest button, gender anxiety. Contrary to gender gurus such as John Gray, who have depended upon exploiting the differences between men and women, Burke debunks the myth that men and women are from different planets. She casts a disbelieving eye on the shockingly popular diagnosis of Gender Indentity Disorder, in which children as young as three years old undergo therapy for not adhering to accepted notions of "girl" and "boy" behavior, and she encourages a shift toward a "gender independent" culture, in which individuals adopt the best traits of both sexes.

This book, from 1996, should be required reading for all parents, teachers, medical students, therapists, and...humans. For we are all--with a very, very few exceptions--born with the sex of either male or female. From then on, as Burke describes, we are constantly trained, at home, at school, by peers, parents, and teachers, that girls "are" one way, and boys "are" another. We are forced into roles based on our sex, whether we like it or not, that conform to what our society has deemed appropriate for our sex.
Those who do not conform--girls who like sports, for instance--are forced even HARDER, to conform. And now, in our brave new world, often young men and women, and even young children, are deemed to be "transgender," and are sterilized, fed hormones, and dressed in clothes that 'belong' to the sex opposite that which we are.
This trend, which has caught fire in the SanFransisco Bay area, is dangerous, horrible, and sad. It denies that any person can live outside the gender role that our sex assigns us, and this also means that Lesbians and gay men may no longer exist.
This book is important for all of us. Why not recognize that females and males need not have gender roles? Why not let us do what is natural for each of us to do? Why need we "change" our sex in order to fit in to what the world wants us to be?
Phyllis Burke has written one of the most important works of our time, and it only becomes more important as the years go on. We are not making progress by encouraging and helping gender non-conforming people to "become" the other sex; it only reinforces the false gender stereotypes that are not in any way natural, and in the process, destroys the spirit of the individual.
