Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This book enables adults who were traumatized as children to learn new strategies to meet the demands of daily living. While focusing on the effects of dissociation and including specific advice for multiples, Nancy Napier presents dozens of exercises helpful to anyone who finds that unresolved childhood feelings are blocking life's path.

Synopsis:

Early abuse can have a profound effect on adult life, especially when survivors struggle with dissociative responses, which range from "trancing out" under stress to the switching of personalities seen in multiples.

Jigsaw Analogy, October 17, 2006 (view all comments by Jigsaw Analogy)
This is an incredibly helpful book for people who are feeling overwhelmed by the process of healing from childhood issues. The author assumes that the person reading it is *capable* of being a competent adult, but recognizes that there are times when things are really difficult to cope with.

This is the book I was hoping for: some clear instructions about ways that I can manage to cope with the fears, anxiety, and intense feelings that have been coming up for me. There are two things that are incredibly useful about this book for me. First, the fact that the author reminds us repeatedly to do what works for us, but gives information on ways to heal. And second, that she addresses the ways that her suggested exercises could work differently if you have multiple personalities (or otherwise extreme dissociation).

One of the reviews quoted on the back of the book says "the title is too modest." Actually, I think the title says exactly what it should: this is a book, yes, about long-term healing, but it gives you the strategies for the much harder part where you need to figure out just how to get through the day. The steps are small and manageable, even in the worst of a crisis, which means that this book really does help.
