Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial, Vincent Bugliosi held a unique insider's position in one of the most baffling and horrifying cases of the twentieth century: the cold-blooded Tate-LaBianca murders carried out by Charles Manson and four of his followers. What motivated Manson in his seemingly mindless selection of victims, and what was his hold over the young women who obeyed his orders? Here is the gripping story of this famous and haunting crime.

Both Helter Skelter and Vincent Bugliosi's subsequent Till Death Us Do Part won Edgar Allan Poe Awards for best true-crime book of the year.

Review:

"One of the best crime stories ever written." Chicago Sun-Times

Synopsis:

"[A] social document of rare importance." The New Republic

Though the lingo is outdated and Mr. Bugliosi's grandstanding is somewhat irksome, this extraordinary account of the Tate-LaBianca murder trial is both engrossing and horrifying. The most unsettling aspect is neither Charles Manson's mystique nor the seven brutal slayings; but rather the willful and unflinching savagery of Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houten, and Charles "Tex" Watson. In August of 1969, these four young people redefined Evil.
