Publisher Comments:

The Pulitzer Prize-winning sequel to THE BIG SKY. Dick Summers returns to the untamed West to guide a group of settlers on the difficult journey to Oregon.

Synopsis:

An enormously entertaining classic, THE WAY WEST brings to life the adventure of the western passage and the pioneer spirit. The sequel to THE BIG SKY, this celebrated novel charts a frontiersman's return to the untamed West in 1846. Dick Summers, as pilot of a wagon train, guides a group of settlers on the difficult journey from Missouri to Oregon. In sensitive but unsentimental prose, Guthrie illuminates the harsh trials and resounding triumphs of pioneer life. With THE WAY WEST, he pays homage to the grandeur of the western wilderness, its stark and beautiful scenery, and its extraordinary people.

About the Author

This book was transalated in Tamil and circulated by American Embassy(India - Chennai) in the name of "Ellatchia Pathai"( which means -way of success). when I was 13 years old, I found and read this book in My uncles library during 1974. I was very much impressed with this book and I kept the book along with other very intersting books and carry the books wherever I go.
I had read several times this book and I was also one among that terrific journey. No one can forget Dick summors and his decesion to go back was THRILLING CLIMAX.

MY freind took away this book during 1991. I could not get it again.
Having oppurtunity of web fecility and I traced this location.
Since I started reading this book in my young age may be the reason for keep remembring.

If I get it either in English or Tamil , I will be very happy.
I reaquest you to send the details to get the book.

Thanks & Regards
S. Ravikumar.

Although written in 1949, The Way West is a must read for anyone interested in historical fiction of America's past. This an unromantic tale of settling the West. The characters and landscape come alive with Guthrie's almost lyrical style of writing. After what seems to be a slow start, each character gains more flesh as we get acquainted with them, one by one, as they eat up mile after torturous mile of hardship to reach Oregon.
