Dead in the Family (Sookie Stackhouse #10)by Charlaine Harris
Staff Pick
Dead in the Family is much more character driven than the last book in Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series. Finding a dead body on her land (no, not the one she knew was there) leads to the discovery that someone (the new Vampire King? the FBI? the unknown fae lurking in her woods?) is trying to frame Sookie for the crime. While Dead in the Family doesn't have quite as much action as previous books, Harris engages the reader by revealing more about some peripheral relationships in Sookie's life, tying up a few loose ends, and offering a few interesting subplots that will hopefully feature in future books. Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:The #1 New York Times bestselling Sookie Stackhouse series — the basis for HBO's True Blood — continues. After enduring torture and the loss of loved ones during the brief but deadly Faery War, Sookie Stackhouse is hurt and she's angry. Just about the only bright spot in her life is the love she thinks she feels for vampire Eric Northman. But he's under scrutiny by the new Vampire King because of their relationship. And as the political implications of the Shifters coming out are beginning to be felt, Sookie's connection to the Shreveport pack draws her into the debate. Worst of all, though the door to Faery has been closed, there are still some Fae on the human side-and one of them is angry at Sookie. Very, very angry... Review:"Still reeling from the deaths of her fairy cousin, Claudine, and many others in 2009's Dead and Gone, Sookie Stackhouse struggles with paranormal politics in her entertaining if slow-moving 10th outing. When Claudine's triplet, Claude, appears at her doorstep, Sookie reluctantly allows him to move in. The government threatens two-natures with mandatory registration, and tensions run high in the local Were pack. Then Eric's maker, a Roman named Appius Livius Ocella, arrives without warning, bringing along Alexei Romanov, whom he rescued from the Bolsheviks and turned into a vampire. Though the action often builds too slowly, the exploration of family in its many human and undead variations is intriguing, and Harris delivers her usual mix of eccentric characters and engaging subplots." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.) Review:"The actual mystery in this entry comes only after the book is well under way and is not always central to the story. But that won't keep readers from thoroughly enjoying the latest entry in the Sookie saga; the slower pace of this book and the emphasis on wrapping up loose ends feels right after the frenetic pace and near-total chaos at the end of Dead and Gone." Booklist Review:"With so many different characters and plotlines, this book is somewhat hard to follow, even for series fans. There is a lot of action and some romance, but Sookie just runs from one emotionally charged and/or dangerous situation to another. Readers new to the series will be confused. Best appreciated by longtime fans." Library Journal Synopsis:The latest book in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series — the basis for HBO's True Blood.
