I have read several of Davis's detective series and loved them but this is the best book of hers I have read. The main characters, Caenis (Vespasian's lover) and the emperor Vespasian are masterfully complex and compelling. They are the best kind of literary character -- people you might have a bit of trouble with if you met them in real life, but you will root for them and cry for them and bite your fingernails for them here.

The plot is a page-turner. Davis's signature arch humor is there; I laughed out loud in several places. Several supporting roles, such as Caenis's long-time buddy Veronica and her chamberlain Aglaus are scrumptious.

(One minor quibble -- Davis's signature offhand homophobia is still just as annoying as ever.)

I am sending a copy of this book to a prickly, strong-willed but insecure friend who, I am sure, will appreciate it.
