Publisher Comments:

A disease of unparalleled destructive force has sprung up almost simultaneously in every corner of the globe, all but destroying the human race. One survivor, strangely immune to the effects of the epidemic, ventures forward to experience a world without man. What he ultimately discovers will prove far more astonishing than anything he'd either dreaded or hoped for.

I read this book about 40 yrs ago. It was loaned to me while I was a lab technician at the Hanford nuclear facility in Richland, WA.. As a young man, it had a profound effect on my wildest imaginations. Especially while employed at a nuclear facility that required my daily handling of plutonium. About 15 years ago I did manage to retain a copy. It still had a kick to it.

I cannot begin to tell you how many times this book has popped to mind since I read it in my late teens. I am now 54 years old and I still think this is probably one of the most influential books of my life.

George Stewart creates a world that could very well exist at any moment in this new millenium. With all the threats of holocaust and new "virii" coming out of the jungle, this scenario is as likely today as it was when Stewart wrote the book in 1949.

I often think of the images that Stewart describes when I hear of another wildfire in the Northwest or another hurricane coming toward the US coast and wonder if we are any better equipped now than the vision that confronted Ish when he came out of the California woods. What if there were no electricity, no gas and no fresh food? How would we learn without all the gizmos and gadgets that surround us now? How would we communicate with an Internet and email and text messaging? It is all a very interesting premise that is very close to home in the world of today.

Take the time to find and read this classic. Then ask yourself "how would I fare in this new world?". You needn't think of villians as in King's "The Stand" or the new anti-Christ as in the "Left Behind" series... just look at the neighbor next door's dog and all the other dogs in your neighborhood. The answer might not be as obvious as you think.
