Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Readers meet Harry Dresden, Wizard for Hire. He finds lost items, conducts paranormal investigations, does consulting work, gives advice and charges reasonable rates. This is the first book in the Dresden Chronicles, with two more to come.

Review:

"An amazingly good first novel." Chris Bunch, author of The Warrior King

Synopsis:

For Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name.

Synopsis:

In this first book in the offbeat Dresden Files, readers are introduced to Harry Dresden, a wizard with a consulting practice in modern-day Chicago. Dresdens profession offers him little money, lots of mockery, the suspicion of his magical colleagues, and plenty of danger.

About the Author

A martial arts enthusiast whose resume includes a long list of skills rendered obsolete at least two hundred years ago, Jim Butcher turned to writing as a career because anything else probably would have driven him insane. He lives with his wife, his son and a ferocious guard dog.

This review is more based on the series as a whole than just Storm Front.

When friends ask for a fantasy recommendation, I almost immediately direct them to The Dresden Files. This hardboiled written series is about a private investigator in today’s Chicago who happens to be a wizard. Did I forget to mention that? Harry Dresden, a seasoned wizard, relies on his dry wit, nerdy references, and awesome companions to get him out of one scrape or another. He may not be as strong as Gandalf, (don’t let him hear that I said that) but he is getting there as he continues to hone his magical skills and makes plenty of enemies along the way. Dresden can get a little chauvinistic and melodramatic at times, but have no fear, there are plenty of strong supporting characters that knock him back into place when he gets that way.

Butcher creates this great series that at first just seems like an airport read in the first couple of novels, but then turns into an epic fun saga that you can’t put down and find yourself standing in line for hours at bookstores to hear him read a preview for the next book in the series. The Dresden Files are hilarious, clever, and a good time.

This series is a great read and I recommend it to anyone, even non-fantasy readers. Fair waring, the series really starts to pick up by book 4, Summer Knight, so don’t give up, it’s a great ride!
