Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying the Works of Shakespeare

Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying the Works of Shakespeare Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Shakespeare's genius is marked by his rare ability to appeal to theatergoers of all types and all levels of education. But for most modern folks, the Greek and Roman mythology and history, let alone the history of England and the geography of sixteenth-century Europe that his works are laden with, are hardly within our grasp. Isaac Asimov comes to making obscure issues clear to the layperson, selects key passages from 38 of the great bard's plays plus two of his narrative poems and, with the help of beautifully rendered maps an figures, illuminates us about their historical and mythological background.

Synopsis:

In an easy-to-read format, the scene-by-scene key reveals the mythological, historical, and geographical roots of all of Shakespeare's plays and narrative poems while supplying the modern reader with the background and knowledge to understand and enjoy these timeless classics. 40 maps. 16 charts.

Synopsis:

From one of the most popular and prolific modern American authors, here is the ultimate reference book on Shakespeare. Previously published separately, this two-volumes-in-one edition contains more than 1,500 pages, illustrated with 40 maps and 16 charts.

This book has literally changed my life. The first time I ever taught a lesson, it was to a group of friends and family at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival who needed The War of the Roses plays explained to them. I used "The Asimov" as my primary research tool. Now, lo these many years later, I am a licensed teacher!
