Q, January 1, 2011 (view all comments by Q)
After the past few years of an eroding economy, increased unemployment, and super-sized debt, individuals and families began to reevaluate their financial practices, adopt urban farming, and attempt to change decade-long spending habits. At the front of this movement is Portland's own J.D. Roth. I discovered J.D.'s blog (www.getrichslowly.org) late in 2010. His book, Your Money: The Missing Manual, was consistently on hold throughout the Multnomah County Library system. When I finally obtained a copy, I was impressed with the accessibility of the writing, the positive advice, and the resources provided, including the "Missing CD" at the back of the book. He provides practical examples, many with a Portland flavor, such as a screenshot of his spending at Powell's in August 2005. Everyone approaches their personal finances in a different way, some techniques work for one person that may not work for another. J.D.'s book identifies several options so that you can develop practices that will work for you. Or, if they don't, he provides other options to consider.
