Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In this taut, chilling novel, Lester Ballard--a violent, dispossessed man falsely accused of rape--haunts the hill country of East Tennessee when he is released from jail.  While telling his story, Cormac McCarthy depicts the most sordid aspects of life with dignity, humor, and characteristic lyrical brilliance.

An absolutely riveting yet revolting look into the life of "Lester Ballard", a "Child of God" as are we all. This book is slim and very, very grim. McCarthy's lyrical genius is always on display as one is forced to watch Ballard from a distance, creating in the reader a slightly sympathetic feel for an errant monster.

This definitely isn't a Blood Meridian or an All the Pretty Horses, but it's definitely worth the read if you're a fan of McCarthy.
