Why should ravens--which are usually solitary birds--share valuable food in the dead of winter? How clever are these birds? Do they have a language? These are some of the riddles that noted sociobiologist Bernd Heinrich, author of Bumblebee Economics and winner of the John Burroughs Medal, explores in this intriguing book. 16 pages of drawings.

As a social scientist and researcher (albeit) in a different field, it is always a pleasure to discover the writings of an academic completely in love with his life’s work. Ravens in Winter is a rare read; a work of love that stays true to basic scientific tenets and research principles. Springing from some place close to the author's heart and yet also remaining close to the data it could also be titled The Diary of a Compulsive Field Biologist or The Man who Loved Ravens. I stumbled across this book in one of those small labyrinthine used book stores where one never knows what lies around the next stack. Moseying along and scanning the shelves, it was the large raven on the tattered dust cover that caught my eye. I opened it up and found that some thoroughly enthralled prior reader had penned legible notes in the margins and dog-eared important pages-- clearly engaged in, and commenting upon, the material. He'd been completely hooked... and so was I. My reading took more than a few enjoyable evenings by the fire. The book is a hoot, loaded with insights, sketches, and observations that could only come from a passionate investigator smitten with his subject. I would recommend this book to any birder or person who might appreciate a precise, new account of animal behavior. You will never look at a raven the same way again.
