Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Davis provides the historical, social, and political contexts with which to reinterpret the performances and lyrics of many famous women blues singers as the articulation of a black, working-class feminist consciousness at odds with mainstream American culture.

Synopsis:

The author of "Women, Race and Class" suggests that "Ma" Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Billie Holiday represent a black working-class, feminist ideology and historical consciousness. Davis' illuminating analysis of the songs performed by these artists provides readers with a compelling and transformative understanding of their musical and social contributions and of their relation to both the African-American community and American culture. of photos.

Through her writing, Davis takes her readers on a journey through the life of some of the famous female blues singers. She included some of her philosophies about societies views towards females. It was a great book and females as well as males should read it. Females who have doubts about their leadership potential should read this book because it gives us females confidence in ourselves and our abilities.
