Book one in the Tripods trilogy. I thought I'd read these books when I was younger, but most of this book was completely unfamiliar, so I suppose I didn't after all. I think I DID read parts of the comic strip adaptation in "Boy's Life" magazine, though... Anyway, I really enjoyed this. The concept doesn't seem 100% fresh anymore, but since this first came out over thirty years ago, it was actually pretty groundbreaking for its time, especially as a YA novel. The basic idea is that the Earth has been reduced to a feudal society by the invasion of mysterious machines known as the Tripods. The Tripods keep humankind docile by a method known as "Capping" -- every young adult is Capped when they reach the age of sixteen, given a permanent metal mesh cap that keeps them from thinking rebellious thoughts about their captors.
Will Parker is nearly old enough to be Capped, but he has grave doubts about the process and the changes it causes in his older friends. An encounter with an unCapped renegade gives him the impetus to flee his village and seek out the small resistance movement that's hidden itself in the White Mountains. What follows is a thrilling adventure.
