Ed Young has written and illustrated seventeen books of his own and illustrated more than 70 books for others. Young came to the United States as a young man on a visa. Young studied architure but eventually gave in to his passion for art. Ed was born in Tientsin, China, grew up in shanghai and now lives in Westchester County, New York with his two daughters and two cats. Ed Young’s “Lon Po Po, A Red-Riding Hood Story From China,” has a different twist than that of the American Red Riding Hood Story, in which Lon means wolf and Po Po means grandma. Lon Po Po is written in third person with a dark alluring tone. In this fable, folk take, and or myth, Shang, Tao, and Paotze were sisters and they lived with their mother and were left alone one night. At dusk, there was a knock at the door and a voice told the young girls that it was their grandmother. Shang quickly tricks the wolf, creatively encouraging her way outside to pick gingko nuts where the girls climb a tree and Shang tells her sisters about the wolf then they courageously defied the in disquise Lon Po Po. Ed Young uses Chinese traditional three picture sequence panels to breathe life into his illustrations. Ed uses a mixture of mediums such as water color and pastels to enhance bewitching appearance especially the eyes of the wolf. Ed Young also chooses to use shadowing and open lines to capture his reader’s attention. The story unravels the mystery of problem solving while the reader learns that taking initiative is done by both young and old.
