Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Never before has the intimate relationship between mood swings and food swings been so honestly chronicled. In Betsy Lerner's raw and witty memoir of a twenty-year battle with depression and compulsive eating, the secret life of women and their self-esteem is vividly portrayed. Lerner tells the story of an adolescence on the outside looking in, watching her slim friends pair off, and believing the only thing between her and perfection was an extra thirty pounds. Joining one of the first groups of Overeaters Anonymous in 1975, she forms a cult-like devotion to the twelve-step program and loses fifty pounds — only to gain it all back and more.

Her twenties are marked by yo-yo dieting, depressive episodes, and a sadistic shrink who dubs her "the boy who cried wolf." Then, just as Lerner begins to realize her dream of being a writer, entering Columbia's prestigious MFA program, she spirals into a suicidal depression and lands for a six-month stay at New York State Psychiatric Institute. There, a young resident helps her take her first steps toward selfhood, unraveling the self-loathing of an eating disorder coupled with a paralyzing mood disorder. He also helps her confront a tragic family secret whose silence had enveloped an otherwise average Jewish middle class family — and begin, finally, to heal.

For every woman who calculates her worth on the morning scale, this is her story, too.

Review:

"Lerner's openness about her struggles and her strength of character will inspire anyone battling to overcome a mental disorder, a weight problem, or any other personal obstacle." Booklist

Review:

"[Lerner's] lament is a triumph." Publishers Weekly

Synopsis:

In Lerner's raw and witty memoir of a 20-year battle with depression and compulsive eating, the secret life of women and their self-esteem is vividly portrayed. For every woman who calculates her worth on the morning scale, this is her story, too.

Synopsis:

Never before Food and Loathing has the intimate relationship between mood swings and food swings been so honestly chronicled. As a bright but chubby girl, Betsy Lerner believed that thinness was the key to success with friends and boys. By junior high, she had precisely divided the world of food into two camps: the dietetic and the forbidden. Becoming a member of the then-fledgling Overeaters Anonymous, she formed a cult-like devotion to the program and lost fifty pounds in a matter of months, only to gain it all back and more. "I am powerless over Hostess cakes," she writes, "and my life has become unmanageable."

Her twenties are marked by yo-yo dieting, depressive episodes, and a sadistic shrink who dubs her "the boy who cried wolf." Then, just as Lerner begins to realize her dream of becoming a writer, entering Columbia's prestigious MFA program, she spirals into a suicidal depression and lands at New York State Psychiatric Institute. There, a young doctor helps her take her first steps toward selfhood and unraveling the dual legacy of compulsion and depression.

A powerfully rendered story for anyone who has every wielded a fork in despair or calculated her worth on the morning scale.

The author's induction into the cult of Overeaters Anonymous is lived out through the pages of her painful experience. Overeaters Anonymous members are not trained people, just other compulsive overeaters. The book resonates with the pain of someone who is in need of something other than a weak twelve step group and its ineffectual interactions. Miss Lerner is very fortunate to have gotten out of this group unscathed and to have eventually gotten the proper help that she needed in spite of having a disreputable psychiatrist. This book is a must read for those that have an addiction to any kind of foods or those even considering an unmonitored support group.
