Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

John le Carré's classic novels deftly navigate readers through the intricate shadow worlds of international espionage with unsurpassed skill and knowledge and have earned him — and his hero, British Secret Service agent George Smiley — unprecedented worldwide acclaim.

A modern masterpiece in which le Carré expertly creates a total vision of a secret world, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy begins George Smiley's chess match of wills and wits with Karla, his Soviet counterpart.

It is now beyond doubt that a mole, implanted decades ago by Moscow Centre, has burrowed his way into the highest echelons of British Intelligence. His treachery has already blown some of its most vital operations and its best networks. It is clear that the double agent is one of its own kind. But which one? George Smiley is assigned to identify him. And once identified, the traitor must be destroyed.

This, though it can stand quite alone, along with its two followers "The Honorable Schoolboy" and "Smiley's People" make up a stupendous writing feat by John Le Carre and his combination of brilliant mental/creative powers and his top notch education. Never was there a sentence, either, to cause me to throw any of them in the dustbin as I so often do with so-called 'great' books. There are so very many books I call 'favorite' but this set has not, to my way of thinking, received the accolades it should........it's the best spy story in all the world but it's also a history book and a cultural anthropology and sociology book and a book of its times and a book on how much of the world thinks of things and how the UK has always thought of the US. I could continue on with its wonderful vocabulary, its fineness in the drawing of its characters and its open dealing with subjects of usual delicacy but it is late and I'm tired. My recommendation is to not die before you read this set even if you have to keep an Oxford dictionary at hand.
