Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Using creative alliteration, his signature Manga-style artwork, and his eye for clever design, Simon Basher brings a fresh approach to reimagining the alphabet. Each spread of Basher: ABC Kids brings a new letter, a new friend, and some hilariously imaginative action. From Arthur, whose angry ant ate apples, to Maude whose mean monkey makes marvelous milkshakes, to Vera who vacuums vegetables, and Zak who zaps zeppelins, each page of this book begs to be turned to see what's coming next.

Review:

"As Basher's series moves beyond science into other subjects, this ABC book provides a stylish introduction to the alphabet while building vocabularies. His chunky cartoon illustrations are front and center, joined by heavily alliterative sentences ('Leonard's lobster loves licking lollipops'). Basher doesn't take shortcuts: the sentences (even Q, X, and Z) only use words beginning with the featured letter. Full-bleed pastel backdrops give the book the feel of a cheerily illustrated sheaf of construction paper; with inventive vocab on left-hand pages opposite pages focusing on one stand-alone image (like 'dog' or 'milkshake'), the book is appropriate for both beginning and developing readers. Smart fun. Ages 3 — 6. (Apr.) Why shouldn't the meadow in the nursery rhyme 'Over in the Meadow' be in Australia? Berkes recasts the song to introduce readers to counting, Australian animals, and the names of their young ('Over in Australia/ Looking like a kangaroo/ Lived a smaller wallaby/ And her little joeys two'). Dubin's lively collages feature textured papers, with pencil and crayon providing extra detail for the animals. Add musical notation for the song as well as detailed information about the 10 featured animals (plus 10 more hidden throughout the spreads), and it's a remarkably layered and entertaining trip to the land of Oz. Ages 3 — 8. (Mar.)" Publishers Weekly (Copyright PWyxz LLC)
