The Ponds of Kalambayi: A Peace Corps Memoir

The Ponds of Kalambayi: A Peace Corps Memoir Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Lovers of fine travel and adventure writing will savor Mike Tidwells richly acclaimed narrative of his days as a Peace Corps volunteer. His task was to help people in the remote corners of Zaire raise tilapia in ponds they would dig themselves, with muscle power alone. This book—with a new introduction by the author—is a masterful account of culture clash, generosity of spirit, and true grit. It is a must-read for anyone with aspirations to “change the world.”

Book News Annotation:

Originally published in 1990, Tidwell (author and documentary filmmaker) revisits his memoirs written in the 1980s while he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Zaire, now The Republic of Congo. His story of teaching villagers living in extreme poverty and disease how to fish, was a complex venture to a seemingly simple activity that was rooted in tradition and heritage as opposed to making profit. His updated introduction briefly describes his successful, but very different, life since that time as well as the upheavals and current climate in the area today.
