Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In irresistibly strange, undeniably beautiful portraits, photographer Tamara Staples celebrates the finely-feathered champions of the American poultry show circuit, the beauty pageant of the barnyard. Location and detail photography, quotes from poultry farmers, insights into the judging process, and an essay by Ira Glass of public radio's "This American Life" complement these high fashion photographs to provide a full appreciation for this most noble of birds. An introduction includes quotes by breeders, followed by an explanation of the poultry world's bible, The Standard of Perfection, including excerpted text and visual aids on judging, breeding, and characteristics from the feathers to wattles of the perfect fowl. 35 posed, full page portraits of exceptional chickens are accompanied by basic information on the breed. Black-and-white candid shots and an interview with Tamara Staples by NPR's Ira Glass provides an intimate look at the people behind these prize-winning chickens.

Synopsis:

Chickens are bewitching birds: lush plumage, gleaming feathers, perfect thighs. But few meet the standard of perfection of the American poultry show, the beauty pageant of the barnyard and the true test of poultry pulchritude. In The Fairest Fowl, photographer Tamara Staples celebrates the champions of the chicken world at their best. Dozens of stunning portraits capture the quirky personality and undeniable grace of these noble birds as you've never seen them before. Location photography of the shows, details of the judging process, strategies from poultry farmers, and profiles of each prize breed set the scene and offer insight for the discerning chicken aficionado. And an appreciation of Staples' photography by public radio's Ira Glass of This American Life explores the finer points of chicken portraiture. Finally, chickens receive the respect they're due.

The book is beautiful, amusing, and ingeniously designed to teach one how to "see" chicken feathers. The birds are gorgeous and goofy at the same time. The wonders of nature, natural selection, and human intervention in breeding are explained and illustrated clearly. Yet the book is much more than a compendium of fine chickenhood. I have purchased multiple copies from Powell's, and I give them to my friends who are artists and art lovers, along with friends who love birds. The book is a work of art, and in its own way, each of the chickens is a work of art. I highly recommend this book for all ages. Tamara Staples has created a small masterpiece.
