Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A lucid presentation of the meditative methods, mantras, mandalas and other devices used, as well as a penetrating interpretation of their significance in the light of contemporary meditative research. Meditative methods ofthe East might have been derived from the mystical techniques of the prophets, and this intriguing possibility, mentioned in the Zohar, is also discussed.

Synopsis:

Kaplan's classic work in which he demonstrates how many advanced meditative techniques were used by the kabbalists.

Description:

Includes bibliographical references (p. 315-342) and indexes.

"Meditation and Kabbalah" is a thorough and lucid study of the role of meditation in Jewish mysticism [Kabbalah]. Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan was the author of many major works [for example, Jewish Meditation: A Practical Guide, Meditation and the Bible, Kabbalah and the Age of the Universe, and A Handbook of Jewish Thought] and the translator and annotator of three classics of Jewish mysticism [Sefer Yetzirah, Bahir, and Derech haShem].
