Laura O. Foster is a writer and expert on the history of Portland, Oregon and the small towns around it. She is the author of The Portland Stairs Book, Portland Hill Walks, Portland City Walks, Images of America: Lake Oswego and the writer/editor of Walk There! 50 Treks In and Around Portland and Vancouver. When not writing about Portland, Foster is busy creating new urban adventures or leading walks for local governments, civic groups, and nonprofits.

I haven't read the new edition, but my girlfriend and I have been using the previous one to guide us on city walks all summer (including three in the past week) and I've really appreciated the author's depth of knowledge of the city's history, her insights and judgment about what's worth seeing, and her moments of humor and commentary. This isn't a dry guidebook but rather a lively gateway to a new appreciation of PDX's hidden treasures. I can't wait to snag the new edition, maybe at the end of our next walk in the Powell's 'hood. You can also see her in action in a couple of episodes of Oregon Public Broadcasting's Oregon Field Guide archived online at OPB's website.
