Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Updated maps, new hikes, new photos, and useful backpacking options make Paul Gerald's authoritative guide to Portland's best day hikes even more useful than before.
Whether travelers want a convenient city bus ride to the flat and fascinating Washington Park, a bumpy drive to Lookout Mountain, or the thigh-burning experience that are Kings and Elk Mountains, this guide outlines what to bring, how to get to the trailhead, where to go on the trail, and what to look for while hiking. Paul Gerald profiles 60 select trails that provide everything there is to enjoy around Portland — mountain views, forest solitude, picturesque streams, strenuous workouts, casual strolls, fascinating history, fields of flowers, awesome waterfalls, and ocean beaches. Book News Annotation:Gerald's writing style is highly engaging, full of personal observations and tips about each part of each hike, so that hikers get a sense of the terrain, what lies before them, and where the best scenery, best picnic spot, best waterfall, or best camping spot are found. Each of the 60 hikes includes a map, a table listing key information, directions, and things to do nearby, in addition to the detailed guide to the hike itself. Hikes are included for the city of Portland. Includes many b&w photos and a second table of contents organizing the hikes by type, such as 1-3 miles, good for runners, and hiking with children.
