100 Classic Hikes in Oregon: Oregon Coast, Columbia Gorge, Cascades, Eastern Oregon, Wallowasby Douglas Lorain
This absolutely gorgeous book won a National Outdoor Book Award, and while it's a torture to read in the rainy season, it's almost indispensable in the summer. It is one of the few books with good information on hiking the Wallowas, and the hike selections are often innovative and unavailable in other guide books. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful color photographs and superb full-color topographic maps by Moore Creative Designs, 100 Classic Hikes in Oregon will make your mouth water and your feet itch for the trail. If it doesn't, check your pulse. Most likely, you're asleep or dead. Rare is the book that makes you want to ignore the "best season" advice and head out immediately. Lorain has helpfully divided the state into regions, and provides information on each area before describing each hike down to the yard. The elevation/relief graphs help plot distance and time when choosing campsites, and the trail descriptions provide everything else you need, including side-trips and environmental concerns such as the best time to cross certain creeks, fire regulations, and peak seasons for flower and mosquito blooming. If only all hiking guides were this good...
Synopses & Reviews
Lorain presents a mix of the most popular trails and lesser-known gems throughout the entire state. Trailheads are easily accessible; trails are well established. They range from short, easy strolls suitable for children and grandparents to longer backpacking trips for experienced hikers. This is the deluxe guide with something for everyone.
Douglas Lorain spends 150 to 200 days a year on the trail, mostly in Oregon. The author of several outdoor guidebooks, his images have been published in scenic photography books, magazines and numerous calendars.
"Think you already know Oregon's outdoors? This new book contains 100 of the best hikes, and chances are there are more than a few pristine places in the Beaver State with which you are not familiar...Well-written, the book has short, concise directions. However, beware! All who read may find themselves planning their next out-of-state trip to Oregon." Desert Morning News (Salt Lake City)
"Author Douglas Lorain has compiled a wonderful bunch of hikes — from the Coast to the Wallowas, Cascades and out onto the High Desert — which will give you itchy feet." The Nugget Newspapers (Sisters, OR)
Written by an Oregon hiking legend, this is the only full-color guide to the best hikes throughout the state. Includes full-color photos, contour maps, and elevation profiles for each hike. One third of the hikes have never before appeared in a guidebook and many of the routes described are loop hikes — no going back the way you came.
