Synopses & Reviews

Review:

"Mapping Portland's quirky, offbeat, DIY, folksy and otherwise overlooked cultural contributions, Carye Bye's Hidden Portland is a refreshing alternative to corporate tourism. Rather, this homepsun collection provides an essential guide useful to visitors, recent transplants and long-time residents alike." Marc Moscato - director of The Dill Pickle Club

Review:

"I thought I knew about all the coolest, funkiest, most offbeat and outrageous museums and collections in Portland. I didn't. Carye Bye does. And you can tell that she loves them all." Harriet Baskas, author of Oregon Curiosities and other odd books

This little book is a fantastic tribute to what makes Portland the special place that it is. A great way to discover the city anew or welcome a friend who just moved to town. Carye's illustrations add to the book's sincere charm and makes me fall in love with this town all over again.

If you travel and like to find things off the beaten path like I do, Carye Bye provides a thorough overview of some of Portland's most hidden treasures. Not only is it factual, but the author adds her own personal touch by letting the reader know her impressions of the museums and collections she features in the book. I really like that about the book because it reads a little more like a personal journey than just a guidebook.

The illustrations are whimsical and wonderful. They definitely add to the charm of the book. Even though it's been published by a small press, the illustrations make it still feel like the artist's book she first came out with. I highly recommend this book.
