Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Shelf Life takes viewers on a whirlwind trip through Powell's City of Books, the world's largest bookstore. It seeks out customers and staff, book buyers and sellers, writers and readers, to discover what this exceptional place means to them, and why reading is important. Writers Chuck Palahniuk and Ursula K. Le Guin, among others, weigh in on the joy and necessity of reading and how it makes us who we are. A love letter to the book itself, Shelf Life gets readers to "tell all" in the aisles and reveal the books that changed their lives. Powell's is a beloved institution in its hometown of Portland, Oregon. Now, viewers — and readers — everywhere can go inside, browse the shelves, experience the eccentric, opinionated staff, and think about what book they'd like to get their hands on if they could have anything they wanted.

Powell's has contributed richness to our lives and our community for many years. But who expected a documentary? Thank you! Shelf Life captures this cultural icon for us all, for Portland, connecting Powell's the Business to their employees, to their customers, to the literary luminaries that live here, and yes, to the community itself, showcasing the enormous diversity of the people who make up that community. It's a look into the history and the impact of changes in business, in the book business, that have only accelerated since the film was made. It is a loving portrait, homage perhaps, but far from a commercial for the store. Completely satisfying experience.

I enjoyed this documentary immensely. I never miss an opportunity to take out-of-town guests for a visit to Powell's and was pleased that the film captured the unique charm of both the store and its clientele. Shelf Life provides insights into both the business of bookselling as practised by Powell's and the city in which it thrives. I love them both!

"Shelf Life" is a day in the life of a world class - world's resource book store, Powell's City of Books. It offers us a great understanding of the mission of Powell's, and the unconventional foundation of this very unique, well, book store hardly seems adequate.
It is a billet doux to books and their authors and the people who help make those books available to us, their readers. Beautifully written, lovingly nuanced, charmingly personal, and revealing. Like all good love letters, it is completely absorbing, entertaining and it leaves us feeling good about ourselves.
