Synopses & Reviews

Review:

"It’s audacious — hell, it’s practically painting a target on your ass and running through a firing range — for an author to come out of nowhere and try to speak for an entire generation. The important thing is, she’s here now, and we should all pay attention." - Paul Constant, The Stranger

Review:

"Yeah. No. Totally. is many things: insightful, acerbic, frustrated, even wistful…Wells’s voice is above all direct, as she levelly describes the world as she sees it." Alison Hallett, The Portland Mercury

Tim Bovee, October 10, 2011 (view all comments by Tim Bovee)
During a panel on "Mean Girls" during Portland's 2011 Wordstock book festival, Lisa Wells was tagged as an example of an author that fits the mean-girl character. Her book of essays, "Yeah. No. Totally.", was described as an attack on her cohort, Generation Omega (her preferred label instead of Gen Y). And Ms. Wells, sitting on the panel, played along.

She and her fellow panelists do her essays a vast injustice. Far from being mean-girl attacks, Ms. Wells' essays are serious reporting on how a generation is coming of age and coping during one of the most difficult times in history.

They're filled with insights and gentle humor, and an amazing cast of characters, such as the barista who laments, "I don't understand why we're supposed to respect our elders. ... It's like, NO. You ... usurped all possibility, and you want my respect?"

"Yeah. No. Totally." deserves a high rank on the reading list of anyone with a serious interest in the women and men who will shape the future.
