Publisher Comments:

The thrilling, internationally bestselling novel about a haute couture seamstress who becomes an undercover spy for the British Secret Service during World War II.

Sira Quiroga is a poor seamstress from Madrid who stitches garments for wealthy women. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, a dashing lover sweeps her off to Algiers, where he abandons her in the midst of chaos. Undaunted, Sira forges a new identity for herself and becomes the most sought-after couture designer in North Africa. The idle rich and the socialite wives of German Nazi officers all clamor for her fashion designs. Soon, Sira becomes embroiled in a world of spies, as she is enlisted to pass information to the British Secret Service through a code stitched into the hems of her dresses.

Synopsis:

An outstanding success around the world, The Time in Between has sold more than two million copies and inspired the Spanish television series based on the book, dubbed by the media as the "Spanish Downton Abbey." In the US it was a critical and commercial hit, and a New York Times bestseller in paperback.

I really enjoyed this historical fiction, set mostly in Madrid and the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco during and after the Spanish Civil War. It's a story of espionage and power, along with friendship, personal growth, and couture design. Having known little of Morocco in those years, that setting was fascinating, and the transformation of Madrid during and after the war were brilliant. I loved the characters and all the roles they played, and only after finishing the novel did I realize many were real people. The perspective of fashion design, textiles, and sewing made this novel rather unique and fun. Since I read it on my Nook, I didn't get to see the end papers and photographs dividing each section until afterwards, and they added a feel for the era that I would have missed if I hadn't later been able to pick up a real book. I read this book in the original Spanish, and was so impressed with the use of language by María Dueñas.

The Time In Between is the story of a poor seamstress who becomes the most sought-after couturiere at the time of the Spanish Civil War and WWII. Sira sweeps the floors at age twelve, apprentices with a seamstress at fourteen, learns the business and plans to share her life with a government worker. She is engaged at twenty and many twists and turns later, becomes an undercover agent in WWII. It's a spicy gumbo of characters - her salesman/lover, the father she never knew that comes into her life, the boarding house residents, the clientele of Nazi officers' wives, the European expats.Intrigue, mystery, turmoil and betrayal from Madrid to Morocco - I was seduced by this story of Sira's courage throughout her life's complicated journey.
