LIVING WITH PIGS: Everything You Need to Know to Raise Your Own Porkers

Chuck Wooster, with photographs by Geoff Hansen

*The definitive guide to raising pigs, whether for pet purposes or pork chops!

Movie star George Clooney prompted thousands of Americans to discover the joys of owning a pot-bellied pig as a house pet. The movie Babe had pigs that were cuter than border collies. Hollywood obviously has discovered what Chuck Wooster already knows: pigs are adorable, clean, and friendly. They are finally getting the respect they deserve, as more and more people are interested in them. Pigs are the fourth most intelligent creatures on the planet, just below humans, primates, and dolphins. They also make for great bacon.  Chuck Wooster’s comprehensive guide to all things pig tells readers which breeds are best for which purpose, how to find them, train them, breed them, butcher them, prepare proper food and shelter for them, and much, much more!  Wooster writes with a reassuring voice and plenty of entertaining anecdotes to outline how easy it is to take care of a pig. And the gorgeous layout is illustrated with full-color photographs throughout.

In the tradition of Living with Chickens,  this is a beautiful book will appeal to “armchair” farmers, hobby farmers, do-it-yourselfers, and animal lovers.

Chuck Wooster raises sheep and pigs and organic vegetables in Vermont, where he is also associate editor of Northern Woodlands magazine. Vermont photographer Geoff Hansen is an editor at New Hampshire’s Valley News, and his photos have appeared in many books and magazines.

Synopsis:

People who love pigs – and believe it or not, there is a significant number of them.

Synopsis:

Pigs are adorable, clean, friendly animals. So its no wonder that youve thought about raising them as companions. But if you also happen to love bacon, and dont like the reports of pollution and cruelty in the pig pork industry, you might consider raising your own pigs as meat animals as well. Keeping pigs happy in either situation means understanding their needs and temperaments. Living with Pigs teaches you all about what pigs need, how to raise them, and which breeds make the best bacon.

Chuck Woosters friendly advice and appealing anecdotes help you:

Choose what breed of pig or pigs is best for you.
Provide the best shelter and food for your pigs.
Train your pig.
Treat your pigs injuries and illnesses.
Butcher your pig and make your own bacon.

Illustrated with Geoff Hansens beautiful full-color photographs, Living with Pigs serves as a great introduction if youre considering owning one or a whole herd of pigs, as well as an essential guidebook if you already own a few.
