Publisher Comments:

A history so funny, so true, so scary, it's bound to be called a conspiracy.

"Meticulous in its research, forensic in its reasoning, robust in its argument, and often hilarious in its debunking, Voodoo Histories is a highly entertaining rumble with the century's major conspiracy theorists and their theories" (John Lahr).

From Pearl Harbor to 9/11 to the assassination of JFK to the Birther movement, David Aaronvitch probes and explores the major conspiracy theories (and theorists) of our time. This entertaining and enlightening conspiracy theory book-aimed to provide ammunition for those who have found themselves at the wrong end of a conversation about moon landings or the Twin Towers-examines why people believe these conspiracies, and makes an argument for a true skepticism: one based on a thorough knowledge of history and a strong dose of common sense.

Montgomery Walker, January 7, 2012 (view all comments by Montgomery Walker)
Voodoo Histories examines a number of conspiracy theories with the intention of trying to understand their rationale, the supporting (if any) evidence, how believers metamorphosize their conspiracies when faced with contradictory evidence, and why people believe what are quite often fantastical, Rube Goldberg-like constructions of past events. Worth reading in order to comprehend how people interpret/reconstruct the past and how these interpretations can move from the realm of the fringe to actually dominating and controlling a society, as in the case of the stabbed-in-the-back myth that conspiracist in German used to explain their defeat in World War One. Eventual that rational helped the Nazi party achieve political control. Voodoo Histories is an interesting examination of how imaginary events develop and are often perceived as reality.
