Publisher Comments:

Senhor Jose is a low-grade clerk in the city's Central Registry, where the living and the dead share the same shelf space. A middle-aged bachelor, he has no interest in anything beyond the certificates of birth, marriage, divorce, and death that are his daily routine. But one day, when he comes across the records of an anonymous young woman, something happens to him. Obsessed, Senhor Jose sets off to follow the thread that may lead him to the woman-but as he gets closer, he discovers more about her, and about himself, than he would ever have wished.

The loneliness of people's lives, the effects of chance, the discovery of love-all coalesce in this extraordinary novel that displays the power and art of Jose Saramago in brilliant form.

Synopsis:

Portuguese translation about a registry office official who attempts to reconstruct people's lives from information found in archive documents to which he has access.

Synopsis:

A spare, taut narrative offering the same quizzical view of life that accounts for the success of Saramago's previous work. B format edition.

Once you open the book and start reading it, you become addicted, yet the books writing style and sentences structure leaves you breathless.
This is a brilliant "Kafkain" book.
It leaves you with mix feelings, identifying with Senior Jose, a criminal and a victim, a victim of the system that doesn?t see the person behind the table, the service, the records, and a criminal trying to get excitement in life and break out of the daily somber life, by breaking the law and the laws of privacy.
The hero wants to leave something behind him once his day comes, he wants to make his name notable, yet the system by the hand of the Registrator, knows how to handle this person and make him unnoticeable.
The book is full with metaphors and symbols, the Shepherd (God?), the cemetery in the mid of the living world and the registry with vague boundary lines.
What a book, what a writer what a language.
