Publisher Comments:

Adventure, Romance, Mad Science!

Agatha Clay is a student at Transylvania Polygnostic University, and a complete klutz. But when the University is overthrown and a mechanical monster stalks the streets, it begins to look as though Agatha may carry a spark of Mad Science after all. This convenient, backpack-sized, black and white edition contains the main story from the first three volumes of the Girl Genius Collection. A perfect gift for anyone new to the series!

Review:

"A sly and witty graphic novel." School Library Journal

Synopsis:

Phil and Kaja Foglio's award-winning webcomic Girl Genius is a steam-powered Cinderella story set in a fantastic world of giant airships, bizarre creatures, and mechanical marvels.

Synopsis:

This illustrated gaslamp fantasy follows the adventures of Agatha Clay: student at Transylvania Polygnostic University and terminal klutz. But is there a reason for her awkwardness? After a particularly bad day at school, Agatha finds herself on board the airship city Castle Wulfenbach, where she discovers there's a lot more to her — and her talents — than she has ever dreamed.

I have to admit, when I started the series I was dubious. The little under-appreciated orphan girl with the secret power plot sounded trite and cliche and I was highly skeptical.

And then I managed to read several years worth of online archival comics in three days and realized I was woefully hooked. The characters are deep, charming, and realistic, the art is drop-dead gorgeous, and the steampunk-esque alternate future setting is intriguing and masterfully done. The plot always manages to surprise, and you come to care about what happens to everyone very, very much.
