I have a new favorite author, folks. Last Night I Sang to the Monster sealed the deal for me. In spite of taking for-freaking-ever to actually get to what happened, I found this book to be so authentic and so heartbreaking. I wept for almost an hour when I put it down because it spoke to me. That sounds so annoyingly cheesy but really.. I was extremely touched by Zach's story.

You can tell that Saenz is a poet. There are moments in Last Night I Sang to the Monster that just ripple with beauty. There are ideas that made my heart soften and ache - for example, the moment spoken of in the summary of the book. The idea of God writing words on our blank hearts is such a beautiful, heart-breaking thought. Do those who have the word "happy" ever consider such a thing? Is it only those with "sad" or "angry" or something even worse that are aware that their hearts are, in some way, broken and in need of help? These are some of the things I kept thinking of as the story unfolded.

Also, another thing I really appreciated about this book was the friendships. The standoffishness of Zach was essential in order for each other character to play a part in Zach's journey. When Rafael, a 53 year old roommate of Zach's, finally shares his story I could barely see the page to continue reading. I was so wrapped up in the daily lives of these characters, so wrapped up in Zach's voice as he narrated what was going on around him, that I felt overwhelmed by emotion when that moment was reached.

I think Last Night I Sang to the Monster is extremely important. It tackles not only addiction, but the need to open up as you try to recover from it. It makes no excuses and freely speaks about how you can just walk away from trying to get better, even giving examples of those who do. But mostly, this book is filled with hope. Because in spite of all of the pain and everything that Zach is trying hard not to remember as it encroaches on his thought processes, there is hope for Zach. And that was the most beautiful part of the story for me.
