Once it was normal for Mark Edick to live his life in fear--always running, always reacting, and usually acting out in destructive ways. Through learning how to live in the principles of his recovery, he found that fear can be felt, faced, and used in healthy and productive ways. The author gets to root of his fears and explains how he was able to view his fear in a new, more positive light and use it as a tool to shape the life he always wanted, but did not think he could attain.

He details his years of overcoming substance abuse with reminders about the myriad stages to recovery, including the danger of becoming too confident in one's successes: 'My ego can take control and tell me I deserve to have life handed to me on a silver platter. After all, I quit using, didn't I?' The importance of a sponsor is stressed throughout, as well as the support of friends and family, and faith in a Higher Power, as Edick learned in a 12-step program. The author does not claim to be a professional therapist, but rather a normal man who was unable to function because of fear and self-doubt. His recovery is ongoing and his story should provide both inspiration and comfort to individuals dealing with the specter of fear themselves, or those whose loved ones live in its shadow. "

About the Author
Mark Edick: Mark Edick is an author in long-term recovery and is a retired auto worker. His first book, Becoming Normal: An Ever-Changing Perspective, was published in 2010. He has an Associate of Arts in Human Services from Lansing Community College and is currently pursuing a second Associate's Degree in Creative Writing.
Edick resides in Lansing, Michigan.
