Publisher Comments:

David Balfour, an honest subject of King George, faces a number of sticky problems before entering his inheritance as Laird of Shaws. Without David's intervention, "James of the Glens" will hang for a murder he did not commit; David's friend Alan, a deserter on the run, needs David's help to flee the country; worse still, David and Alan are wanted for their alleged part in the Appin murder. Amidst the legal corruption and political intrigue of 18th century Edinburgh, David falls in love with the tale's Highland heroine, Catriona MacGregor Drummond, the daughter of Jacobite rebel and convicted criminal James More. Seperated by events, David and Catriona are brought together by their mutual friend, the memorable Barbara Grant, on board a ship bound for Holland.

About the Author

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in 1850 in Edinburgh and studied law before turning to the writing life. Early books of travel, tales and essays were followed in 1886 by Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and by the Scottish romances Kidnapped and Catriona. A ceaseless traveller, plagued by ill health, he settled on Samoa for the last years of his life, and died there in 1894.
