Publisher Comments:

A gritty, high-stakes adventure set in a futuristic world where oil is scarce, but loyalty is scarcer.

In America's Gulf Coast region, grounded oil tankers are being broken down for parts by crews of young people. Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew, scavenging for copper wiring just to make quota-and hopefully live to see another day. But when, by luck or by chance, he discovers an exquisite clipper ship beached during a recent hurricane, Nailer faces the most important decision of his life: Strip the ship for all it's worth or rescue its lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who could lead him to a better life....

In this powerful novel, Paolo Bacigalupi delivers a thrilling, fast-paced adventure set in a vivid and raw, uncertain future.

The description for this title seems to have both the synopsis for Orleans by Sherri L. Smith along with the correct one for Ship Breaker listed.

Bacigalupi has created a fascinating--and plausible--near future world where climate change has raised the sea levels, oil is no longer the dominant fuel, and the gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots" has become a chasm. Engaging characters--especially the genetically-created "dogman", Tool--and a quest for escape and freedom from a life w/little future culminate in a fulfilling read.

I was recommended this book at a store as an easy summer read, as opposed to Bacigalupi's more dense "The Windup Girl." It definitely was a fast paced, easy summer read, and I enjoyed it. Maybe as a result of this, I did feel the characters were a little one dimensional, and the plot, especially near the end, was a bit contrived. Still, it was as advertised, and I can't really ding the book too hard for being a bit on the light side when that's I asked for.
