Publisher Comments:

It's Sam Pettigrew's last year of high school. And he's spending it figuring out how, at age seventeen, he is supposed to care for his baby son, Max. andlt;BRandgt; Max wasn't part of the plan. He wasn't even part of the backup plan. But he's here now, and Sam is attending an alternative high school with other teen parents like himself. Talk about a wake-up call. But Sam is determined to make it work, to show everyone — his dad, his new girlfriend, himself — that he has what it takes to be a good dad. andlt;BRandgt; Trading footballs for diaper bags and college brochures for feeding schedules, Sam gives fatherhood his best shot. Only no one told him it would be this hard. What if his best isn't good enough?

Synopsis:

Bechard writes with humor and empathy, weaving the story of 17-year-old Sam in a very real look at the lives of teen fathers today. "A breath of fresh air . . . a poignant winner of a book."--"School Library Journal," starred review.

Sam is a single teen dad and obstacles in the book lead him to make a difficult decision. Good for teens!

Sam has all the normal teen obligations and worries, but now he also is a single father. Max's mother couldn't deal with being a teenage mother, but Sam wouldn't let her but the baby up for adoption. After a while Sam feels like he is slipping, he can't possibly handle all of what people expect him to do!

Although this seems like it should be an interesting twist on teen pregnancy novels, it definitely fell short. The characters were poorly fleshed out and extremely contrived (I was rolling my eyes at a good bit of the backstory.) The plot... well, it never actually turned up, so we basically just watch Sam and a couple teen single mothers take care of their kids and whine for all 150 pages.

I was sorely tempted to bash my head on the table while trying to finish this book. Save yourself the pain and don't try.
