Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Leo Caraway — high school senior, president of the Young Republicans club, 4.0 GPA, future Harvard student — had his entire future perfectly planned out. That was, until the X factor. As in Marion X. McMurphy, a.k.a. King Maggot, the lead singer of Purge, the most popular, most destructive band punk rock has ever seen. He's also Leo"s biological father.

When Leo discovers that his real father is a punk rock legend, he is disgusted. Not only is Leo not a punk rock fan, but he believes the X factor (the Maggot blood that is running through his veins) is a dangerous time bomb just waiting to explode. And sure enough it does — Leo stubbornly defends the unlikeliest of people, thereby getting himself falsely accused of cheating on a test.

Because of the blemish on his record, the once star pupil finds his scholarship to Harvard taken away. So he hatches the crazy plan of going on tour with King Maggot for Purge's summer revival tour, all the while secretly hoping to convince Maggot to pay for his tuition. But life on the road is even crazier than Leo ever bargained for, and before the summer is out, he will finally discover the surprising truth about his dad, his friends, and most important, himself.

Synopsis:

Leo Caraway, president of the Young Republicans Club and a future Harvard student, has his entire future planned. But Leo is soon thrown for a loop when he discovers that the lead singer of punk rock's most destructive band is his biological father.

Outstanding YA author, Gordon Korman creates characters who are original, funny, likeable and authentic. Born to Rock is another very entertaining novel focusing on teen male angst and antics. Korman's teens are not stereotypes or one dimensional. In Born to Rock, the protagonist is a normal ambitious student named Leo. Leo worked hard to earn a scholarship to Harvard with perfect grades and a stellar resume. He is also a great friend, and is president of the Young Republicans (because of a girl, of course). He naively believed his future was going to be a smooth, dull path to success until two events send him spiraling into a huge black hole of despair. Leo is so admirably ethical that he refuses to be coerced into falsely accusing a friend of cheating, so he gets accused instead costing him his Harvard scholarship. About the same time, straight-laced Leo finds out his Dad is not his bio-dad. His bio-dad is punk rock mega superstar, King Maggot, internationally known for his dastardly lyrics and lifestyle. Leo decides to use one crisis to solve the other -- he will go on tour with his bio-dad, and after they get to know each other, Leo will hit him up for tuition money. Leo's summer of sweat, humiliation and stress on tour makes for a joyful read.

My 12 year-old son talked me into taking this book with me on a business trip recently. I was a little reluctant, but was surprised how quickly I slid into Leo Caraway's world. The characters were terrific with a lot of range and the ring of authenticity. I loved the story of this seemingly normal high school senior who got caught up in the world of rock 'n roll as he tried to solve a dilemma about attending college. For those of us who lived the New Wave and Punk Rock era, there was a lot to enjoy in the characters of King Maggot and his entourage. The book treads some interesting waters-- issues regarding biological parents, aging idols, roadies, and revival rock tours. There's some really fine work here about teen identities, too. I was unexpectedly drawn in and found it very hard to willingly set down the book until it was over. Who knew teen fiction could be so good?
