Book News Annotation:

The original 2002 edition was slimmer by one volume. This revised and expanded third edition is in three volumes, the first two of which contain 141 essays pertaining to weapons and history (56 completely new), arranged chronologically within thematic groupings. The third volume offers 35 overviews (34 are new), providing contextual information with regard to culture, sociopolitics, and ethics. Essays are written with students in mind, using a logical template that begins with overview and significance before addressing history. The front matter offers a categorized listing of entries; the comprehensive index is in the third volume. Intended for students (high school and above) as well as general readers and researchers looking for a starting point, this reference includes plenty of supplementary material: photos, time lines, listings of web resources and of war films and war literature, and an annotated bibliography. In addition, purchase of the print version includes online access to the publisher's historical reference database through the end of 2011. Editor Powell is affiliated with Oklahoma Baptist University. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
