"I'll show you the life of the mind!" With "No Country for Old Men" receiving rave reviews, this is a perfect time to return to one of the Coens' oddest and best films. "Barton Fink" doesn't really fit in any category, as it is part Hollywood satire, part writer's block nightmare, part subtle horror movie, and part sheer weirdness (John Turturro's hair to start). Turturro's writer character is supposedly based on Clifford Odets and John Mahoney's drunk is more than a little like Faulkner, who wrote in Hollywood. The film is funny, but it's not a strict comedy and it becomes richer with repeat viewings. Pay attention to all the references to the head and the mind. Sometimes we all have that Barton Fink feeling.
