Publisher Comments:

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom—all because of a reckless bargain her father struck. And since birth, she has been training to kill him.

Betrayed by her family yet bound to obey, Nyx rails against her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, she abandons everything she's ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, disarm him, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle—a shifting maze of magical rooms—enthralls her. As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex's secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. But even if she can bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him?

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Review:

"Fiery 17-year-old Nyx has always known she is destined to marry the prince of demons — her father bargained her away before she was born. Even so, she has been trained in the Hermetic principles, and she hopes to use her skills to thwart Ingnifex's power and save her homeland from his control. When she arrives at the ruins of his ancient castle, nothing is at it seems: the rooms constantly change location, and she finds both beautiful magic and chilling horrors behind the countless doors. Also, Nyx cannot deny her attraction to Ingnifex, who is not exactly the monster she dreaded to meet. Debut novelist Hodge has created a rich, complete world in this twist on 'Beauty and the Beast'; it can be slow-going (though not unrewarding) to wade through details about the demon's many rooms and the complicated, tragic mythology that brought him there. However, the banter between these well-matched foils is lively and sharp, and the pace picks up toward the end as Nyx first sacrifices for duty, and then for her own heart. Ages 13 — up. The Lost Entwife, January 25, 2014 (view all comments by The Lost Entwife)
I was not expecting to fall completely head over heels for Rosamund Hodge's retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Cruel Beauty was almost... almost perfection. I say that with my fingers this close - - to each other because, you see, there was just a small little detail that I struggled with...but I may not even talk about that detail because this book was that close to perfect (did I mention it was THAT CLOSE?). I am a huge fan of fairy tale retellings and Cruel Beauty was engrossing. I struggled with myself because I wanted to just devour it as quickly as I could, but then I knew that it would come to a close way too soon. In the end, I I just devoured it a bit slower...but still, I devoured nonetheless.

What did I love about Cruel Beauyt? Let's talk about Nyx. Gone is the Disney Beauty who dances and sings and reads books before throwing away her life in an effort to save her sickly father. No, Nyx is not nearly that noble. Nyx is living a nightmare while her sister lives the dream You see, woven throughout Cruel Beauty is so much Greek mythology it made my heart flutter. Nyx is being married off to the "all-powerful, immortal Ignifex," and there's not a damn thing she can do about it. So does she sing songs and willing give up her soul? Nope. Because Hodge recognizes that perfect girls in fairy tales is completely overdone. Instead, Nyx becomes someone that the reader can sympathize with, struggle with, root for, and wonder just what she will choose in the end.
And that leads to something else I loved about Cruel Beauty. There's no clear-cut answer. Every decision has a consequence, every deal has a drawback. Hodge puts her characters into impossible situation and toys with them, something I also recognized as a technique used when studying the actions of the Greek gods. It was entertaining and terrifying all at once to watch the strings get pulled on each character and I loved every minute of it.

Finally, that little thing that bugged me? It gets worked out in the end in a very satisfactory manner. I didn't really find it to be that annoying - I just can't say this book is perfect because, well, it was too short. I'm writing this because it ended. Color me disappointed in that. In the meantime, I foresee more re-readings of Cruel Beauty in my future as I anxiously await Ms. Hodge's next book.
