  • A historical document of years of research on flagella
  • Fills a specific niche that shows flagella in several varied organisms

Book News Annotation:

After a career spent researching the flagellar motor of Salmonella typhimurium and other related species, Shin-Ichi Aizawa was left with thousands of electron microscope images of eubacteria and archaeal species. Here he presents 35 different strains. For each strain there is a picture of the whole cell, the isolated flagella and any other cell appendages. Also included for each strain is a genetic map of the flagellar genes and an analysis of the genes. Interspersed between the chapters on specific eubacteria strains are sections dedicated to basic topics including gene regulation, Mot proteins, and flagellar position and shape. The appendix consists of an introduction to the flagellar family and methods for purification of flagella and observing the flagella under the microscope.
