Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This funny fractured fairy tale goes behind the scenes of Rumpelstiltskin. "A most magical feat," writes Newbery Honor-winner Kirby Larson, "Liesl Shurtliff spins words into gold."

In a magic kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone's joke. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. Rump discovers he has a gift for spinning straw into gold. His best friend, Red Riding Hood, warns him that magic is dangerous, and she’s right. With each thread he spins, he weaves himself deeper into a curse.

To break the spell, Rump must go on a perilous quest, fighting off pixies, trolls, poison apples, and a wickedly foolish queen. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendship—and a cheeky sense of humor—he just might triumph in the end.

A Texas Bluebonnet Master List Selection, Rump is perfect for fans of Gail Carson Levine's Ella Enchanted or Adam Gidwitz's A Tale Dark and Grimm.

"Lighthearted and inventive, Rump amusingly expands a classic tale." —Brandon Mull, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fablehaven.

From the Hardcover edition.

Synopsis:

In a magical kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone's joke.

Rump has never known his full name—his mother died before she could tell him. So all his life he's been teased and bullied for his half-a-name. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. For Rump discovers he can spin straw into gold. Magical gold.

His best friend Red Riding Hood warns him that magic is dangerous—and she's right! That gold is worth its weight in trouble. And with each thread he spins, Rump weaves himself deeper into a curse.

There's only one way to break the spell: Rump must go on a quest to find his true name, along the way defending himself against pixies, trolls, poison apples, and one beautiful but vile-mannered queen. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendship—and a cheeky sense of humor—Rump just might triumph in the end.

An inventive fairytale retelling, perfect for fans of Gail Carson Levine or Shannon Hale.

Synopsis:

Twelve-year-old Rumpelstiltskin has never known his name—only part of it—and with a name like "Rump" it's no wonder his life stinks.

When Rump finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. For with the wheel he discovers he has the magical ability to spin worthless straw into glittering gold—as much gold as he wants! His best friend Red Riding Hood warns him about the dangers of magic, but of course Rump doesn't listen. And it's a pity he doesn't, because that gold is worth its weight in trouble. As more people find out, they all demand a share of the wealth, and Rump's problems quickly spin out of control.

To set things right, Rump must go on a journey to discover his true name, along the way defending himself from pixies, trolls, poison apples, and one beautiful but vile-mannered queen. The odds are against him, but with a little help from Red, he might just succeed.
